The club was formed in September 1994 to help kite flyers in southern Hampshire (UK) get together to better enjoy their flying. Most of our current membership live within 20 miles of the Solent, hence the name... Weather permitting, we meet twice a month (calender) for flying sessions, at various sites scattered between Portsmouth in the east, and the New Forest area in the west. IN THE BEGINNING - A New National Body for UK Kite Fliers? April 2003 For many years, various members of the kite flying community have discussed the possibility of, and need for, a representative body for all kiteflyers. There are several excellent organisations speaking for particular groups or providing specific services, such as The Kiteflier magazine from KSGB. But there is not a single body that represents us all, including the more extreme variants of our sport/hobby.

Air Born Kites was founded by Estelle Barton and Paul Thody in August 1991, four years after their first (adult!) kite flying experience. The first Brighton-based shop was opened in December of that year selling a variety of stunt kites, power kites and accessories. March 1999 saw the creation of a second retail outlet in the newly opened Bluewater Park complex near Dartford in Kent. With two outlets, many experienced staff and over 16 years in the trade, we feel that we have a lot to offer.
